A new version of Kali Linux, the ethical hacking-focused Linux distribution, has been released, called 2022.3. It comes with additional tools for creating a local penetration testing environment. The developers also announced a new Discord server.

What's new in Kali Linux 2022.3?

The developers announced the new version of Kali Linux on Twitter, also confirming the DefCon and BlackHat hacking conference in Las Vegas in August 2022.
Kali Linux is a version of Debian specially designed for penetration testing. To this end, we put a lot of effort into setting up a local environment for budding hackers to provide hands-on experience. The latest version includes DVWA, or Damn Vulnerable Web Application, and Juice Shop.

These are web applications designed to give users practice breaking into them. The ostensible purpose is to let developers understand how hackers can compromise websites so they can design more secure sites.
"Practice makes ~perfect~ permanent. So practice, practice, practice! Curious minds can then start experimenting with new configurations, options, commands, and flags. Then start linking projects together, or comparing similar and alternative solutions, and then Results are compared to improve education and benchmark knowledge. This adds to the experience," reads the release announcement.

What else is in Kali Linux 2022.3?

There are a few other tools making their debut in the new version of Kali Linux. These include the BrueShark network analysis tool, DefectDojo, a security orchestration and vulnerability management platform, phpsploit, a tool that maintains control of infected servers, shellfire, another program designed to exploit server vulnerabilities, and SprayingToolkit, a tool that attempts to guess at big data Number of passwords for the online versions of Microsoft Teams, Lync, and Outlook.

Existing users can download the new version using the package manager or from the download page . The developers also provide pre-built VirtualBox images.

Kali community turns to Discord

Kali developers took advantage of the new release to announce that the primary means of communication for the developer and user community is moving to Discord. Despite the existence of open source live chat tools like Matrix and IRC, Kali's move acknowledges that most of their audience is on Discord.

The developers explain their reasoning in an official Kali Linux announcement blog post:
[Discord is] a common and popular platform that has become very popular over the years. People have gone through the process of signing up and getting familiar with the UI. For those who are not, you can sign up and chat in minutes. Getting started is simple and straightforward.
The move also follows a 2021 "hostile takeover" of Freenode, an IRC network that is home to many open source projects. Many developers flee Freenode for Libera or other IRC servers. While Kali will maintain an IRC channel on OFTC, Discord will be the main focus from now on.
The developers will hold hour-long chats after each Kali release, with the next one scheduled for August 14, 2022.

Hacker's Favorite

With so many hacking tools included, it's no secret that Kali Linux is a hacker's favorite. This release may be no exception for people looking for legitimate ways to test the security of their servers and networks.
