Heart of the Machine report

More people using Arm hardware will lead to better Arm software.
After successfully running Linux on Macs with M1 chips, now M2 chips can also run Linux systems !
Typically, Linux kernel updates aren't covered much by the publishers, in part because most updates are pretty routine. That is, any given Linux kernel update will address some bugs, improve support for existing hardware, and make some forward-looking changes to expectations for new hardware.
The arrival of Linux kernel 5.19 is no exception.
But Linux kernel creator Linus Torvalds mentioned an interesting note about this release in his release notes, the Linux kernel 5.19 update was done on Arm laptops, i.e. on the Apple M2 MacBook Air .
Torvalds said: "I've been waiting for this for a long time, and now it's finally a reality, thanks to the Asahi team. We've been running Linux on arm64 hardware for a long time, but until now it hasn't really been a reality. used as a platform for development.”
Torvalds runs Linux on his M2 MacBook with the help of Asahi Linux, which has been working on reverse-engineering Apple's hardware. The Asahi team's goal is to send all of this research upstream into the main Linux kernel so that all distributions can benefit, and the Asahi team has added support for Apple chips such as the M2 or M1 Ultra .
In 2020 Torvalds once wrote: The M1 Air launched at the time was arguably perfect as an Arm Linux laptop, but I didn't have time to update the Linux kernel at that time. In 2022, Torvalds is finally here.
For most Linux users, though, it doesn't matter what computer Torvalds is currently using, and Asahi Linux is still in its early days, a lot of it isn't perfect and functional.
We can envision more people using the Arm version of Linux, which means more people will be involved in fixing Arm-related bugs, which will benefit new releases, and more people finding and fixing Arm-specific issues in their own software .
Ultimately, everyone's experience with Linux on Arm hardware will improve, although these will take years to complete. But coupled with things like Qualcomm's upcoming high-performance Arm chips and Microsoft's commitment to Arm hardware and software, they could make Arm-powered PCs a more attractive and competitive alternative to traditional Intel- and AMD-powered x86 PCs.
It's also worth noting that Torvalds believes that version 5.20 of the Linux kernel will eventually become version 6.0, not because of specific feature updates, but because he's starting to worry that users will be confused by version numbers. Kernel versions 3.x and 4.x also transition to the next version number around their 20th version.
