Mario Rodriguez, VP of Product at GitHub, described it this way on his official blog:

“The new GitHub Projects enables user development plans to connect directly to the work the team is doing in GitHub, with the flexibility to adapt to the relevant items the team needs. Project tables are as easy to build as spreadsheets, providing developers with a real-time canvas , which can be used to filter, sort, and group issues and pull requests. You can use it to attach to project panels or custom fields to track sprints, plan features, or manage large-scale releases, etc."

The new GitHub Projects enables users to group and adjust issues by stage, priority, status, assignee, or any custom field.

Users can also define concepts related to priorities, tags, assignees, OKRs, reviewers, QA stages, etc. in the type system of user flows and workflows.

GitHub Projects also supports configuring and tracking sophisticated visualizations such as cycle velocity, current work status, and cumulative flowcharts.

Rodriguez added:

“Software development teams no longer have to spend hours updating issues, updating spreadsheets, and generating status reports. With built-in workflows and powerful APIs, bots can be used to automate as many processes as possible, allowing developers to focus on the project key point".

Over the next two quarters, GitHub said it will focus on continuous improvement in everyday scenarios. This includes adding parent-child, duplicate, dependent, and blocking relationships to issues and projects to keep each member consistent, as well as new automation features with custom triggers, conditions, and action logic.

The new timeline layout will allow for quick division of work by team, program or product line.

In addition, GitHub plans to offer a new experience for GitHub mobile.
