TIOBE has released the programming language rankings for August 2022.

TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen pointed out that Python seems to have an unstoppable trend. The scripting language has added another 2% this month, and now its market share has reached an all-time high of 15.42%, it's hard to find an area of programming where Python isn't widely used.

"The only exception is (safety-critical) embedded systems, because Python is dynamically typed and too slow. That's why the high-performance languages C and C++ are also gaining popularity these days."

Looking at the rest of the TIOBE index, there was little change last month. Swift and PHP swap places again, Rust starts to approach the top 20, Kotlin returns to the top 30, and Google's new language, Carbon, enters the 192nd position in the TIOBE index.

PHP knocks out Swift and returns to the TOP 10 list. The rankings among TOP 11-20 are still fluctuating repeatedly. Compared with the previous month, the rankings have risen: Classic Visual Basic (13→12), Delphi/Object Pascal (14→13), Objective-C (16→14), R (19→16), Matlab (20→17).

Falling down the rankings are: Swift (10→11), Go (12→15), Ruby (15→18), Fortran (18→19), Perl (17→20).

The TIOBE Programming Community index, a measure of programming language popularity, is updated monthly.

Judging is based on engineers, courses and third-party vendors worldwide, including popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube, and Baidu, which are used for index calculations. It's worth noting that the TIOBE index does not represent how good a programming language is or how much code is written.

The index can be used to check whether your programming skills are still up to date, or to make decisions about which programming language to use when starting to build a new software system.
